Genomics Core

RTSF would like to welcome, Dr. Nicholas Beckloff, the new Director for the Genomics Core. Nick's office is located in Room S-20B, Phone 884-7301, E-mail: beckloff@msu.edu.
The Genomics Cores provides small scale to genome size high throughput DNA sequencing. The core also provides infrastructure for SNP profiling, fragment analysis genotyping, Quantitative Real Time PCR, and a number of microarray platforms for gene expression, a CGH, and methylation analysis.
The expertise and protocols needed for next-generation sequencing are complex and changing almost daily. Sequencing capabilities are increasing exponentially, like Moore's law for computing. In the past couple years the increased capacity to sequence DNA has changed the way genetic research is conducted. The MSU facility can produce nearly 50 GB of data each day - more than 15 times the data in a single human genome. Researchers attach DNA to glass slides and use one of the two Illumina sequencers to amplify to 10,000 times before running a sequence reaction and assembling the sequence.
